Review of “Flat Out Love” by Jessica Park

This was a good representation of the various ways that people deal with grief and the lengths that they will go to to soothe someone they love.

This is a story about a young girl venturing away from home to attend college only to find that her apartment that she purchased on Craig’s list of all places without confirmation is nonexistent.  Her mother’s college friend lives in Boston with her family and allows Julie to stay with them.  What was first a temporary situation became permanent.  The family is weird and that’s mild for how messed up they are.  The youngest is infatuated with a flat cardboard version of her oldest brother.  Without giving anything away, the book takes you through the next year where Julie uncovers the mystery of why this family is so messed up.  She ends up helping the family immensely and pretty much becomes a family member.

This book was a very well written story.  There are hints throughout the book that clue you into the real situation of the family and what has happened if you pay attention.  This is great humor through use of intellectual puns and facebook postings.  It made me laugh, cry a bit mad and a whole lot of happy from time to time.

Definitely worth the read.
